Chapter 17

I stared at April in shock.

“You heard all that?” I asked.

“I needed the toilet,” she replied, “but then I heard you talking so I listened outside the door.”

I picked up my stake and gripped it tightly. “Be careful,” I told her. “He’s dangerous.”

“So, Dimi’s a vampire?” she asked.

I nodded.

“If that’s true,” she said, “then you must be a vampire hunter.”

My mouth fell open. How did she know about vampire hunters?

“My grandma told me,” April said, and held up her hand to show me her ring. “When she told me about witches, she also told me about vampires and hunters and fairies and a lot of other things too. So if Dimi really is a vampire and you’re a hunter, then it must be true. I’m a witch.” As she said the last word, she squirmed.

“Yes,” I replied.

“Did you know the whole time?” she asked me. “Did you know witches were real?”

“Not at first,” I said, wanting to melt into the floor and vanish, “but then… I found out.”

She cast her eyes down. “You should’ve told me.”

“I tried, but—”

“It makes sense now,” she interrupted, facing Dimi. “The sunglasses, the way Etty didn’t want to be near you. And you’re so pale.” She stepped towards him.

“Stay back, April,” I warned her. “Did your grandma tell you what vampires do to humans?”

April’s shoulders stiffened. “She said they drink human blood.”

“I have to take him to Traxis,” I said.

Dimi came to stand next to me, his head down. “I can’t fight you,” he said, “so let’s just go.”

“Dimi,” April said, “you’re not going anywhere. You didn’t do anything wrong.” She threw me a determined look. “I can tell you what really happened yesterday.”

Part of me thought I should just ignore her and take Dimi away – but what if she was right? Could Dimi be innocent?

He can’t be! I thought. The vampire in the graveyard said Dimi was going to be the strongest, cruellest vampire in the world.

April went to stand in front of the door. “I’m not letting you take him until you’ve listened to me,” she said firmly.

“Fine,” I replied. “What happened?”

“Well,” she said, “on the way to lunch I saw Bane Larkin walking downstairs. He was wearing Dimi’s sunglasses and I knew Dimi wouldn’t have given them to him. So I walked up to Bane to tell him to give them back. Like I expected, he just laughed at me and said he was going outside.”

“And then what?” I asked impatiently.

“He walked out the main doors and onto the field,” she replied. “After that, Dimi came downstairs. He was upset, so we went to an empty classroom to eat lunch together.”

“What about Bane?” I asked.

“I didn’t see him again,” she said, “but I was with Dimi the whole lunchtime. He couldn’t have done anything to Bane. He was with me.”

I rubbed my forehead.

What was I going to do? Bane had vanished. Mum had vanished. And if Dimi wasn’t responsible, who was? And how would I find them?

“Fine,” I said to Dimi.
